The situation in Ft. Myers has greatly improved in the past week; life is getting back to “normal” for many people. New roofs are being put on and new sheetrock is being hung all over the area. However, for many life is far from being even close to “normal”, or even close to “new normal”. Debris still is piled high on most streets, particularly in neighborhoods where flooding occurred. More than 70,000 cubic yards of debris per day are being removed, but homes still need to be mucked out. Trees still need to be cleared.
The distribution of supplies at Zion Lutheran Church is finished and shut down. They will still be doing an occasional drive for particular needs, but nothing in the immediate couple weeks.
Volunteer work crews have been able to clear out a large number of jobs we had, and we are working on getting a second round of jobs for the remaining three weeks of work crews. We should have little trouble having work for volunteers. Volunteers will need to be flexible (“Semper Gumby”), as teams may work muck-out, tree removal, or debris pickup jobs on any given day as needs dictate.
Camp Zion will be closed the week of Thanksgiving, November 20-26, 2022. No volunteers will be working that week. There is still room for a few volunteers the week prior (November 13-19).
Camp Zion will be operational through Friday, December 2, 2022. HOWEVER, November 28-30 will be used to clear out remaining jobs. December 1-2 we will be closing down, taking down, and restoring.
