Local LERT Team Event, Tornado Chainsaw Work/Debris Cleanup, Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Tulsa OK, 3-10 thru 20-2026

Description

At about 7:15 p.m. Friday, Mar. 6, a tornado touched down in Beggs, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The E-3 tornado killed two people, injured two others, and destroyed at least four homes. The Beggs tornado is one of at least 7 confirmed tornadoes that touched down in eastern Oklahoma on Friday.

A Level 1 damage assessment was conducted on Mar. 8, which determined a minimum of 22 trees will need to be felled, bucked and limbed, then moved to the curb or loaded into county roll-off dumpsters.

Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church will be hosting local LERT volunteers for debris cleanup and chainsaw operations. However, we will be meeting daily at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) every morning before deploying to the work sites.

Inclement Weather Plan: Hot weather is expected in the area and precautions are advised. Ten Hot Weather Safety Tips: Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids; drink about 16 ounces before starting and 5 to 7 ounces every 15 or 20 minutes. Avoid dehydrating liquids. Alcohol, coffee, tea and caffeinated soft drinks can hurt more than help. Wear protective clothing. Lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing helps protect against heat. Change clothing if it gets completely saturated. Pace yourself. Slow down and work at an even pace. Know your own limits and ability to work safely in heat. Schedule frequent breaks. Take time for rest periods and water breaks in a shaded or air conditioned area. Use a damp rag. Wipe your face or put it around your neck. Avoid getting sunburn. Use sunscreen and wear a hat if working outside. Be alert to signs of heat-related illness. Know what to look for and check on other workers that might be at high risk. Eat smaller meals. Eat fruits high in fiber and natural juice. Avoid high protein foods.
