This event is sponsored by SED Disaster Response and is hosted at Camp Linn Haven in Linville, NC, with the assistance of Mountainside Lutheran Church.
The purpose of this event is to give participants an opportunity to serve their neighbor with the love of Christ by caring for their physical needs and by talking with them to encourage them with the mercy of Jesus Christ.
This event is funded by a generous grant from LCMS Disaster Response working through the LCMS RSO Camp Linn Haven (SED district). Hosting costs are funded by LCMS Disaster Response.
Participants are encouraged to arrive on Saturday evening and work on site Monday through Friday.
Description of work:
This project may involve a variety of tasks that could include: debris removal, replacing insulation, drywall, building porches or other wood-working projects. This is all among other activities common to storm damage recovery efforts, due to damage from to Hurricane Helene. At this stage of disaster recovery we are in need of those especially who have trade skills including construction, plumbing, or handyman experience. None of which are a requirement, but would be very helpful.
You may be assigned to any variation of tactical tasks related to those aforementioned trade skills, as well as other projects involving cleaning, landscaping, or other needs as they may arise.
All tools and materials like masks and gloves, and what not will be provided if needed.
IMPORTANT NOTES
LERT background checks are required for this Deployment because we are working in peoples' homes. The LCMS LERT system will take you to the Sterling Volunteers website to get your background check (no cost to all LERT volunteers) when you sign up for this LERT Deployment.
Make sure your tetanus shots are up to date! Consult your physician for any other recommendation they may have for working in a dirty environment.
LCMS Disaster Response covers the hosting costs. Volunteers should bring funds for incidental expenses.
What will be provided:
Housing will be at Camp Linn Haven via dormitory style rooms: 4 bedrooms with 8 bunks each and full bathrooms. Rooms will be determined based on male to female volunteer ratios and needs.
- There will be times when teams may be housed at other locations outside of Camp Linn Haven based on availability of the Retreat Center. When that happens, Heather Bassett will provide those details to team leaders closer to arrival date.
Food for meals will be provided each day, but teams are responsible for cooking those meals.
You should bring sufficient funds to pay for extracurricular travels during the deployment period.
What you need to bring:
Clothing appropriate for the season.
- We consistently experience rainy and windy weather here in the high country. It is important to pack clothes and shoes that can get wet.
