Volunteer: LERT Deployment, Tornado Damage Cleanup, Monmouth IL, 7-18 and 7-27 thru 8-1-2026

LERT volunteers are needed to conduct tornado damage cleanup in Monmouth, IL. Please note the main portion of this deployment is July 27 thru Aug 1st.

All LERT volunteers are encouraged to wear yellow LERT shirts or vests along with appropriate clothing for the weather. Non chainsaw volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy work boots, work gloves and a hard hat.

All chainsaw volunteers are required to wear all appropriate PPE. 

All volunteers will need to bring their own water, Gatorade and lunch each day.

IF needed, housing will be in the gym at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg, IL. We are still working on showers and meals. This description will be updated as we secure them.

 A second multiday deployment for LERT-trained volunteers is scheduled for Monday-Wednesday, July 20-22, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. This disaster response for tornado damage cleanup includes both chainsaw operations and general debris cleanup.



Zion Lutheran Church is the gathering place for all LERT volunteers to check in and receive work assignments. The church will provide lunch, snacks, and water for all workers.  Volunteers are responsible for their own lodging if needed.  Each person should bring their LERT ID card and a medical card in case of emergency.  If you have not completed the online Background Check, now is a great time to do so for future deployments. 


For Basic LERT-trained Volunteers:

Debris cleanup may involve both organic (plants, branches, wood) as well as inorganic (metal, shingles, siding)Dress appropriately. The temperatures are expected to be in the 80s or higher.  Wear sturdy work boots and gloves (NO sandals or flip-flops). Layered clothing with long sleeves and long pants is strongly recommended. Wear your LERT T-shirt. LERT vests will be available on site.Be flexible in work assignments.

 

Chainsaw Operators Must have completed Basic LERT Chainsaw Training. 


Chainsaw Operators should bring the following:

Chainsaw, bar oil, gas/oil or synthetic fuel mix, Chaps and other Personal Protective Equipment (helmet, eye protection, ear protectors, gloves, and steel-toe boots). Participants must wear steel-toed boots. Outdoor work clothes and boots appropriate for the weather at the time.

Work will consist of tree, branch and debris removal. Wood will be blocked and stacked for later use. Branches and debris will be stacked for removal.
