Mucking (cleaning) of homes affected by floods or water intrusion can be hazardous work. The Florida-Georgia District seeks to ensure the safety of our volunteers assisting us with muck-out operations. The following protocols will be followed on muck-out jobs.
- Only volunteers age 18 and older may work inside a flood-damaged home.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn, as appropriate for the job.
- Mask or respirator – N-95 or higher rating
- Rubber boots
- Eye protection
- Tyvek covering
- Hard hat
- Rubber or nitrile gloves
- Cloth or rubber-coated cloth gloves
- Because muck-out is dirty work, often with a peculiar smell, volunteers should wear old clothes that can be thrown away. Shorts, tank tops, and open-toed are not allowed to be worn on the job site.
- All volunteers should have training on muck-out safety. Training may be provided here on an as-needed basis.
- Because volunteers will be working in people’s homes and handling their personal property, background checks are required for all volunteers. If you don't have a current LERT background check the system will take you through the process while you signup for your desired shift. You can signup for shifts on the Hurricane Ian page on LCMS LERT.
