This event is sponsored by SED Disaster Response and is hosted at Camp Linn Haven in Linville, NC.
The purpose of this event is to give participants an opportunity to serve their neighbor with the love of Christ by caring for their physical needs and by talking with them to encourage them with the mercy of Jesus Christ.
This event is funded by a generous grant from LCMS Disaster Response working through the LCMS RSO Camp Linn Haven (SED district). Hosting costs are funded by LCMS Disaster Response.
Participants are encouraged to arrive on Saturday, attend worship at Mountainside and participate in LERT Training on Sunday, and work on site Monday through Friday.
Description of work:
This project will involve, debris removal, replacing insulation and drywall, and other activities common to storm damage recovery efforts due to damage due to Hurricane Helene in the Linville, NC area. Drywall experience is helpful but not required, and training will be provided as is necessary. All tools and materials will be provided.
All materials, masks, and rubber gloves will be provided. The LERT camp will provide all tools you need for the work.
You may be assigned to work mucking out homes, removing and hanging drywall, cleaning at the volunteer camp, meal preparation and cleanup, assisting with camp logistics, or other areas as needed.
IMPORTANT NOTES
LERT background checks are required for this Deployment because we are working in peoples' homes. The LCMS LERT system will take you to the Sterling Volunteers site to get your background check (no cost to all LERT volunteers) when you sign up for this LERT Deployment.
Make sure your tetanus and hepatitis shots are up to date! Consult your physician for any other recommendation they may have for working in a dirty environment.
LCMS Disaster Response covers the hosting costs. Volunteers should bring funds for incidental expenses.
What will be provided:
Housing will be at Camp Linn Haven in dormitory camp housing. Separate lodging will be provided for male and female volunteers.
Meals will be provided each day.
You should bring sufficient funds to pay for extracurricular travels during the deployment period.
What you need to bring:
Clothing appropriate for the season.
Toiletries and prescription medicines
Sturdy shoes/work boots will be a necessity for carrying sheets of drywall down steps that have had carpet, etc. removed from them.
Work gloves
Protective eyewear
Long pants (jeans) and work shirts (of course, socks, etc.!)
Funds for meals and incidental expenses

Activities planned:
LCMS Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) training will be provided.
Skills training for the work site will be provided. Skilled mentors will supervise all work to ensure safety.
This is a working LERT deployment. Expect eight (8) hour workdays and to be tired at the end of the day!
