The Ranger Road Wildfire swept through Lutherhaven Retreat Center (near Knowles, Oklahoma) on February 17, driven by 65 mph winds.
Primary buildings were not damaged, but there is infrastructure damage that requires attention.
Important Note
This will NOT be a typical chainsaw/storm-debris deployment.
There are many opportunities for LERT-trained volunteers who prefer non-chainsaw work.
Project Work Includes
- Cleaning bunkhouses (dirt, soot, and sand infiltration)
- Replacing burned wooden steps up embankments with concrete
- Sanding and painting metal handrails
- Collecting and removing burned debris
- General maintenance projects
- Clearing brush around buildings and back roads
- Power-washing and staining a bunkhouse
- Dock and ramp repairs
- Welding project (handrails)

Location Details
- Lutherhaven Retreat Center, Oklahoma Panhandle
- 6 miles north of Knowles, OK (population: 6)
- 30 miles to nearest grocery store and hospital
- 50 miles to nearest Walmart
- Remote setting with limited services
Site Features (Bonus!)
- Spring-fed lake stocked with bass, crappie, and perch (bring fishing gear)
- Excellent stargazing due to minimal light pollution
Accommodations
- Bunkhouses with 2–3 twin XL beds per room
- Additional open sleeping area with beds available

- Meals: We need to provide all our own meals. Volunteers for food prep are appreciated.

- Cell service is poor and very limited (better reception ~1 mile away)
- WiFi may be available — contact site supervisor if needed

- Final 6 miles are dirt/sand/rock roads → Sub-compact cars NOT recommended

- Work hours will adjust based on weather (can be hot in mid-April)
