Tornado Damage cleanup in Detroit Lakes, Mn area, July 8-10, 2026

Description

Severe weather with tornado activity struck just north of Detroit Lakes, MN, on Monday evening.  Extensive damage resulted with telephone poles and trees downed as well as property damage.  Some of members of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes sustained property damages.  A multiday deployment for LERT-trained volunteers is scheduled for Wednesday- Friday (July 8-10) from 8:00am to 4pm each day.  This disaster response includes both chainsaw operations and general debris cleanup.

Zion Lutheran Church is the gathering place for all LERT volunteers to check in and receive work assignments.  The church will provide lunch, snacks, and water for all workers.  Volunteers are responsible for their own lodging if needed.  Each person should bring their LERT ID card and a medical card in case of emergency.  If you have not completed the online Background Check, this would be a great time to do it for future deployments.

For Basic LERT-trained Volunteers:

  • Debris cleanup may involve both organic (plants, branches, wood) as well as inorganic (metal, shingles, siding)
  • Dress appropriately.  The temperatures are expected to be in the 80s or higher.  Wear sturdy work boots and gloves (NO sandals or flip-flops).  Long sleeves and long pants are strongly recommended.  Wear your LERT T-shirt if you can, or a  LERT vests will be available on site.
  • Be flexible in work assignments.

Chainsaw Operators Must have completed LERT Level One Chainsaw Training.

Chainsaw Operators should bring the following:

  • Chainsaw, bar oil, gas/oil or synthetic fuel mix,
  • Chaps and other Personal Protective Equipment (helmet, eye protection, ear protectors, gloves, and steel-toe boots).
  • Participants must wear steel-toed boots.
  • Outdoor work clothes and boots appropriate for the weather at the time.

Work will consist of tree, branches and debris removal.  Wood will be blocked and stacked for later use. Branches and debris will be stacked for removal.
