Volunteers needed to help cleanup efforts following the tornado in Andover, KS on April 29, 2022.
Nature of work: Debris removal, retrieval of personal effects, possible chain saw work (for LERT
chainsaw teams only), picking up metal, wood, bricks and other construction debris, etc. and moving it to the pickup site.
Host congregation is Peace Lutheran Church, 405 W 21st. St., Andover, KS 67002
Volunteers coming from a distance should be self-sufficient and bring bedding, cot/mattress, supplemental food, and any
necessary work clothes (sturdy work shoes and gloves or boots for mud) and equipment for their shift. Minimal sleeping space is available. If you will need lodging, please let Donna Williams know that you would like to stay overnight.
Peace Lutheran Church is providing a mid-day meal for LERT volunteers at the host site on May 7th & 8th. An evening meal and breakfast for Sunday morning for out-of-town responders will be arranged once we know how many will be staying overnight.
Personal Protection Equipment & Gear:
- Sturdy shoes with a good solid sole & socks - no sandals, flipflops, Hey Dudes or sneakers.
- Long pants
- Long sleeved shirt (recommended)
- Ball cap or hard hat
- Safety glasses/eye protection
- Sturdy work gloves
- Dress in layers as it may be cool starting out and warm up as the day progresses
- Rain gear (recommended)
- Water bottle
- Trash bags (for your own trash)
If your group or team has a first aid kit, bring it with you.
*Any volunteers that show up without registering will be considered spontaneous and will not be permitted to join in the work until volunteer registration is completed.* REGISTRATION IS AT PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH. Please plan to carpool to the work site as parking is very limited. You have park in the parking lot and Peace.
Background checks are required for all volunteers who will enter residences, retrieve or process personal items, work with youth, or stay at the LERT volunteer host site. The background check is processed through the LCMS LERT system when you sign up for a shift. YOUTH 14-17 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT WHO WILL BE WORKING AT THE SITE.
Local COVID protocols cannot always be followed in a disaster response situation. We ride in trucks together, eat together, sleeping quarters are not spacious. Each individual can socially distance to their own comfort level.
