The Lord's young people bring an amazing array of gifts to this work: energy, enthusiasm, friendliness, and love for their distressed neighbor. LERT service is a great way for the entire congregation to join together in God-pleasing service and to enjoy each others' company.

LERT teams do not have to wait for disasters to serve their congregations with works of Christian mercy. The ordinary days of congregational life offer many opportunities for regular LERT service.

Why Background Checks?

LCMS LERT, for most LERT volunteer deployments, will require a volunteer background check to be eligible for signing up - particularly for responses involving volunteers working in a person's home, working with youth, handling others' personal property, or staying overnight in a LERT housing camp. We're Christians. We humble ourselves so that our neighbor is served with the love of Christ. The little pain and inconvenience we undertake for our confession of Christ's holy name pales in comparison to what the martyrs gave in love for their neighbors and for their Lord Jesus.

The Value of Gift Cards

Yet the involvement of the local church does not end after a gift card exchanges hands. In reality, it's a tool that fills an immediate need and initiates a relationship between affected community members and the local congregation, a relationship that is revisited and fostered over the ensuing weeks and months as the congregation and her members seek to provide long term care (in both body and soul) for her neighbors.
